Purgatory Chasm State Reservation
Make a day of boulder-filled exploring: families can start with the easy 1-mile Charley’s Loop or take the moderate 1-mile Chasm Loop to rock formations such as Fat Man’s Misery and the Devil’s Pulpit. The reservation is open sunrise to sunset; through October 26, daily parking is $5 for Massachusetts vehicles and $20 for non-Massachusetts vehicles. The chasm trail has uneven, slippery rocks, so keep children close to the edges and skip it in wet conditions.
